The Rolex Bubbleback Wristwatch

Just after one year, Rolex was ready to introduce its first and most moderate perpetual wristwatch with self winding movement. In 1933, Rolex launched Bubbleback model in the market.

The Swiss watch maker never engraved Bubbleback on the display but Rolex Oyster Perpetual below the ordinary position of 12 o’clock. The question is how it became familiar with “Bubbleback”? The answer is due to is bubble shape and thicker case back. The thicker Auto-Rotor was the reason that led to the thicker case. This model is also known as Ovettone which in Italian means “little egg”. The primary Bubbleback was 1858 model powered by Ref.520 movement. The first Bubbleback models featured a deep case back and also a three piece case. 3131 and 3132 were two new models that were rolled out by Rolex in 1936. These two new models featured a new modified movement and two piece new cases.  The difference between these models was that 3131 model was powered by Ref 620 and 3132 model was powered by Ref 630.

The early Rolex Bubbleback models were also first wristwatches that were made in stainless steel known as Steelium. Few Bubbleback models were also made in Rolesor (gold and steel combination). 1935 an important breakthrough was made by Rolex when they equipped Bubbleback with a new streamlined balance wheel the Super Balance. This feature improved the Auto-Rotor functioning. A ladies model of Bubbleback was presented by Rolex in 1941 which was powered by Ref 420. In 1950s few model of Bubbleback were introduced with Bombe lugs feature. With consistent changing in techniques and style finally the new mode known as the Big Bubbleback was introduced. Later on Bubbleback directly led to the manufacturing of one of the flagship models of Rolex “The Rolex Datejust. However the wristwatch was discontinued by the company in 1960s.
