A Brief History of Rolex Luxury Wristwatch Brand

Rolex is known is the world’s best selling watch brand for over hundred years. The Replica Rolex watches are trending nowadays in all aspect of life successfully. Unfortunately, branding is now taken a negative nuance in majority of customers. The world of luxury watches is so vast that one can find variety of watches for their needs. Whether you are fashion lovers, professional diver or driver, luxury timepieces are always here to serve you. With so many quality brands available in the market, Rolex stands out the most successful, unique and popular one. The quality of Rolex timepieces speaks by itself and therefore known for making quality products.

Performance, quality, stability and innovations are the prime pillars of Rolex that are contributing in its fame and success for years. The company was founded Hans Wilsdorf and Davis in 1905. Initially Rolex used to sell travel clocks and pocket watches. It was due to the fact that wristwatches were meant only for women as fashion accessories at that time. Soon pocket watches became so impractical that people turned towards the practical wristwatches. In-fact, it was the Boer War of South Africa (1899-1902) in which soldiers used wristwatches and proved to be the turning point in the history of wristwatches. Wilsdorf and David realized the opportunity and started to produce high quality watches. Soon they formed the company W & D which was later one changed into the Rolex. Brand name was a unique and distinguishing factor discovered and well used by Wilsdorf. Another prominent example of simple brand name was Kodak, the camera by George Eastman.

Wilsdorf worked at Swiss watch exporter with Aegler at Cuno Korten. He used to check fifteen watches for their accuracy and performance. It was this job that lead him to produce accurate timepieces. The most interesting fact is that Aegler also produce exclusively for Rolex and the company is owned by Rolex too. He also received an award for producing the world’s first chronometer watch. The award proved to be the breakthrough for Rolex and the brand became popular for finest watches. The company was awarded class A Certificate of Precision in 1914 from the Kew Observatory in England. The A Certificate was previously give to the marine chronometers. During the test, the timepieces were subjected to five positions in three different temperatures. The testing process lasted for fifty five days.

Soon Wilsdorf realized that his watches needed to the extremely accurate along with durability. In his visionary direction and leadership, the company made many innovations in creating technology and also buying patents that made Rolex watches water proof, dust proof and auto winding. All Wilsdorf did is that he showcase and advertise its performance of his new and unique products in a dramatic manner. After the illustration of world’s first water resistant watch, the new competition begun for the makers. Georges Peret and Paul Perregaux, the two inventors developed a new and unique moister proof winding button and stem. But the problem with the winding stem was that it placed inside the watch case and needed to be opened everyday for winding. Rolex’s had the world’s only perfect moisture proof case with the winding system situated outside the watch. Rolex Oyster watch was developed from the very same design. Mercedes Gleitze swam across the English Channel on 1st October 1927 sporting the Rolex Oyster. The swimming adventure lasted for more than fifteen hours but the Rolex remained in perfect condition.  Hans Wilsdorf was wise man and he capitalized on this. On 27th November 1927, in London daily mail he advertised Gleitze picture with Rolex and her story on the front page. On his instructions, Rolex Oyster was showcased in small aquarium on its outlets to exhibit the water resistant of the watch. On 29th October 1953, the Mount Everest was successfully conquered by Sir Edmund Hillary while wearing the Rolex Explorer.

In its more than hundred successful journey, Rolex did several innovative things to maintain its stability as the world’s best wristwatch brand. It was the stability that wiped out number of watch brands but Rolex not only survived with its stability and also blossomed. Quartz watch was produced in the 1950s which were lead to low cost timepieces. During the 1970s, quartz technology was so popular that almost half of the watches sold around the world were made of this. The headquarters of the Rolex has been located in Switzerland and they never used any outsource which keeps its ideal quality control. A typical quartz watch features around 50 to 100 parts whereas a Rolex has around 220 parts and it also takes a year to produce. Combined with a true craftsmanship and strong brand name, Rolex is indeed the best in the watch business.

Rolex kept up to its image, name and quality and never tried its luck on other products. Whereas other luxury manufacturers lent their names into other high end products and gained temporary benefits but most of them diminished forever. But Rolex is the name known in the world of wristwatches only. Most of the known watch companies are owned by two or three large holders whereas Rolex is the only brand that stand firmly and never tool shelter under any conglomerate. Such renowned group of companies took fair advantage of their corporate resources and promoted their individual product lines. Wilsdorf left the company in 1960 and began to look after the foundation in order to avoid their interests. He didn’t want to mix his brand with other different watch companies and the company being publicly traded by a large company. Rolex has been the world’s best watch seller and it will comfortably compete in the upcoming years. Rolex customers are aware that there investment is in worthy products. The innovative techniques, high class performance, commitment and its stability are the features that make Rolex the most valuable product. Rolex popular watches include Submariner, Explorer, GMT Master, Sea Dweller, Datejust, Daytona, Daydate, Yacht-Master and many other quality luxury wristwatches. The company is keeping a keen eye on the changing world and successfully modifying its timepieces from time to time.
