In terms of accuracy and precision Rolex lies at top of the list of luxury watches. The Swiss brand has remarkable history in the world of horology as offered numerous iconic watches. Rolex timepieces are also presented as safer economical investment. Nowadays Rolex is not only style and fashion icon but also precious collectable pieces. In 1954, Rolex unveiled its Submariner at Basel World Fair that also earned name from James Bond movies later. Submariner Rolex is one of the top iconic models that initially manufactured as a diver’s watch.
Initially, Submariner Rolex concurred with underwater breathing apparatus called Scuba. So in 1961, Rolex released its two new versions of Submariner Rolex, one with water resistant to 200 meters while the second less expensive to 100 meters. Later Submariner Rolex became the choice for the character 007 in early ten James Bond films as well as achieve “Sub” as iconic status.

Original Submariner Rolex 6200:
It was manufactured in 1953 as a diver’s watch with 200m depth rate and 8mm crown. This early model contained no depth rating on dial as well as no crown guard. The dial of Rolex Submariner 6200 was similar to the Rolex Explorer of that time and the name Submariner was not printed on the dial also.
Submariner Rolex 6204 and 6205:
With printed name, Submariner and depth rate to 100m with 6mm crown Rolex introduced Submariner 6204 in 1954. There was no change in the watch dial, but Rolex used an upgraded non-chronometer A260 movement in this model. Still the crown guard and depth rating on the dial was absent in this model. In the same year, Rolex Submariner model 6205 also introduced in same size and features. But later in 1955 when this model updated, first time the depth rating was now printed on the white dial.
Submariner Rolex 6536 and 6536/1:
An updated model of 6205, Submariner Rolex 6536 was also unveiled in 1955 from Rolex with no depth rating on dial and crown guard. This Submariner came with 100m water resistant feature having 8mm crown. The updated version of this model was introduced with printed depth rating and the name Submariner on dial. Model also introduced with bezel of the watch first time that contained markers for first 15 minutes. In the very next year, Rolex introduced the updated version 6536/1 almost the same but a triangle on bezel in red printing distinctively.
James Bond Submariner Rolex 6538:
Early James Bond Submariner Rolex 6538 came in 1955 with a depth rate of 100m having 6mm crown. In fact, the model was an upgrade of model 6204 that contained A260 movement. Later in 1956 model upgraded with the printed name Submariner on dial and 200m water resistant with 8mm crown. Later in up-gradation of the model “Official Certified Chronometer” now also printed on dial.
Submariner Rolex 5508:
This was the 1958 when upgrade model of Submariner Rolex 6536/1 was presented with the name of Submariner 5508. This model never hold crown guard and depth rate on dial but updated later and luminous markers not enclosed by the circular border.
Submariner Rolex 5510:
The advanced model of Submariner 6200 came in upgrade version with the Ref. 5510 in 1958. That had 200m depth rate with 8mm crown. A bit changes occurred in the model of 1964 with presence of depth rating and white printing on dial.
Submariner Rolex 5512:
In 1959, Rolex introduced its new Submariner model that contained new 1560 Chronometer movement, depth rated to 200 and “Officially Certified Chronometer” printed on dial. Later in 1965, the model updated with 660m depth rate, rating also printed on dial and “Superlative” added on dial printing.

Submariner Rolex 5513:
This Submariner model launched first in 1962, with crown guard and depth rating printed on the dial, 200m depth rated while dial was marked with Swiss along with a Non-Chronometer movement. In the very next year, the model was updated up to 660m depth rate. In 1968, Navy Submariner was introduced under this model with soldered strap bars.
Submariner Rolex 5517:
Rolex crafted its Submariner 5517 especially for British Marines in 1971 with 200m water resistant. This distinctive model carried a crown with triple lock, bezel with 60 minutes markers and soldered strap bars, large minute and hour hands. Additionally above the depth rating special large T print to show luminous material.
Submariner Rolex 1680:
The model Submariner 1680 was launched in 1966 with 200m depth rate and 8mm crown. New 1575 Chronometer movement with date feature was used in this. Submariner printed in red on dial. Later in 1972, updated version released with the same movement but dial lettering was printed in white.
Submariner Rolex 16800:
1982’s Submariner Rolex was referred as Rolex Submariner 16800 equipped with water resistant up to 300m and 8mm crown. All dial letters were printed in white and low profile sapphire crystal become the part of this watch. Depth rating was also printed on the dial and new 3085 Chronometer movement used in the interior of watch.
With the rest of time Submariner Rolex earned its name and Rolex Company remained in production of this iconic model. In 2003, Rolex celebrate the 50th anniversary of Submariner Rolex by launching the Submariner 16610 with green bezel and maxi dial. Today’s Submariner Rolex is considered one of the iconic models from the brand. Mostly model featured with advance attributes like trip-lock system, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, in-house movement and quality material like 904L stainless steel. Additionally you can find Submariner Rolex in different dial colors now.
